The same year the US entered World War II, Ward Melville was completing construction of the first planned business center in the country in Stony Brook, Long Island. Take a guided virtual stroll to explore the Village’s many unique features and reflect upon early 20th century America – its transition from the 19th century, the world at war, and the making of the suburbs.
Stories include the history of the hand-crafted eagle atop the pediment of the Stony Brook Village Post Office, the early art studio and paintings of mid-19th century artists William Sidney Mount, and the bizarre origins of the Village’s Hercules figurehead.
